Easier kerning in Photoshop
You probably know that you can kern text in Photoshop using the character palette above. The field that says -40 is the field for kerning. Adjusting the values manually is tiresome, and today I discovered a little trick to make things easier. Simply select a text layer, hold down the alt key, and use the left and right arrows to shift the kerning. I made a little demo video to show how this works. This saves you a trip to Illustrator if the kerning is not so-so important.
If you don’t know what kerning is: kerning is the art of adjusting letter spacing. John Gruber has a good basic explanation in a comment on his Flickr photostream.
In other kerning news, check out the fantastic Max Kerning, a site made by Extensis to promote their updated font manager.
And even handier: using alt + the up and down arrow keys increases and decreases line height.

Very handy indeed!
You didn’t really explain that you have to select the text in the layer *itself* (selecting a text layer is not enough). It’s nice that this shortcut also works when no text is selected (when your text insertion cursor is placed right before of after a letter).
