In defense of Huddlechat
“We’re flattered Google thinks Campfire is a great product,” said Jason Fried, 37signals CEO and co-founder. “We’re just disappointed that they stooped so low to basically copy it feature for feature, layout for layout. We thought that would be beneath Google, but maybe its time to reevaluate what they stand for.”
Really, you made a web application that has the features chat rooms have since like what, the eighties? Since when are ‘rooms’ and ‘users’ unique features? How much new ‘features’ can you think without turning into Windows Live Messenger? Tabbing from the Huddlechat to Campfire the similarities are clear, but then again, tabbing from Remember the Milk to Ta Da list brings up the same feeling. You don’t own every simple app idea.
Update: Huddlechat has been taken down. Such a shame.
