Recommended reading material (2)

A follow-up post to Recommended reading material.

  • Markdown basics, by John Gruber

Markdown is a markup language intended to simplify text editing. I write most of my blog posts in either HTML or markdown. Markdown is my preferred ‘markup’ language when I know the article is going to be mostly textual. It has a very simple syntax and frees you from the interface clutter in word processing applications like Word and Pages. My editor of choice (Textmate) has an shortcut that automatically converts markdown to HTML, and also makes writes markdown a breeze.

  • There are no trends in design, by Kyle Meyer

There are no trends in design, there are merely the illusion of trends. Once a certain visual style gets popular, designers (or, as the article calls them, stylists) without a clear vision or style copycat it in ways worse than the original, making it seem like a trend. Kyle puts forth some designers who do have their own distinct style.

  • Become an e-mail marketing expert, by the guys at Freshview

The makers of Campaign Monitor and Mailbuild offer an extensive list of articles and compatibility charts. This is the best resource if you ever need to mark up one of those pesky HTML e-mail newsletters, hands down.

  • Learn to program, by Chris Pine

A clear introduction to programming, in which Chris Pine explains the basics of Ruby. Highly recommended.

  • Compose to a vertical rhythm, by Richard Rutter

You’re probably doing grids, but are you aligning type to the same baseline? Richard Rutter explains the concept of vertical rhyhtm with several Bringhurst-y references, a lot of precision work and a bit of humor. Hit me with your rhyhtm stick!

Again, a follow-up with more reading goodness coming soon. Hopefully.
