Thecure

The Cure - 4:13 Dream
Released on I AM, Geffen, 2008

Looking at my stats, the most listened to artist of this year was The Cure. They played in Belgium march this year, but unfortunately I missed that concert. New album “4:13 Dream” is in heavy rotation on my playlist, but the one responsible for the most plays was “The Singles 1987-1997”.

Cocorosie

CocoRosie - Noah’s Ark
Released on Touch and Go Records, 2005

The music discovery of the year was definitely CocoRosie, sparked by seeing their adaptation of Kevin Lyttle’s “Turn Me On”. Talk about turning around a song. Honorable mention goes to The Dresden Dolls who also convinced me with a cover: “Amsterdam”, originally by Brel.

Joyd

Joy Division - An Ideal For Living EP
Released on Enigma - PSS139, 1978

Last year’s Walk The Line sparked a temporary Johnny Cash listening spree. The same happened this year with Control, directed by well-known music photographer Anton Corbijn. Control is a film about the life (and death) of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. Definitely a must-see.

New Website for Ancienne Belgique

Mixing music and webdesign, we built the new website for Belgian concert hall Ancienne Belgique, which I am very proud of. Improvements over the original website include: the ability to post comments to artists and concerts, a real blog, your own concert calendar, the ability to trade tickets with others and to find a carpool.

Go check it out and be sure to register yourself!

Please note that these Best of articles are written from my perspective of 2008, so some content might be from last year, the year before, or even from way before. These articles are intended to be a personal review of the past year, not a historical one.

A big thank you to the Dirkster, for introducing to a new genre, namely jazz. Dave Brubeck Quartet is a regular in my iTunes nowadays, with the occasional listening session of Miles Davis. Another thank you goes out to Bramus, who introduced me to Blockhead, Landscape, Múm and Urbs.
